Legal Counsel / Senior Legal Counsel
Join ASB's Legal Services Team- A great opportunity for lawyers wanting exposure to the breadth, pace, and impact of an in-house role within a Big 4 bank.
We're looking for an experienced commercial and technology lawyer to join ASB's highly regarded Legal Services team on a 3-month fixed-term contract, providing cover while an employee is on leave.
This is an opportunity to work on complex, commercially significant matters and partner with senior leaders across the bank, helping ASB deliver its strategic priorities while effectively managing legal and reputational risk.
Te Tūranga | The Role
Reporting to the Head of Advisory, you'll provide practical, commercially focused legal advice across a broad range of matters, including:
- Technology and software contracting
- Cloud and outsourcing arrangements
- Procurement and strategic commercial contracts
- Data protection and privacy
- Digital initiatives and intellectual property
You'll work closely with stakeholders across the business, negotiating key agreements, managing legal risk, and contributing to important strategic outcomes.
We're open to applications from:
- Legal Counsel: 7+ years' relevant private practice and/or in-house experience
- Senior Legal Counsel: 10+ years' relevant private practice and/or in-house experience

- Strong commercial and technology law experience
- Sound judgement and a pragmatic approach to problem-solving
- Ability to build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills
- New Zealand law degree and admission to practise in New Zealand
- Current, or eligibility to hold, a New Zealand practising certificate
- Financial services experience is advantageous but not essential
